Florida Municipal Solar Project capacity to quadruple to 600 MW

The Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA), along with 20 municipal electric utilities in Florida, has joined forces with Origis Energy to announce a substantial expansion of the renowned Florida Municipal Solar module Project. This project, already standing at 150 MW, is recognized as one of the largest solar initiatives backed by municipalities in the United States. The alliance’s collaborative efforts aim to further enhance the project’s capacity and impact, solidifying its position as a significant contributor to the state’s renewable energy landscape.

At present, the Florida Municipal Solar Project comprises two solar farms: Taylor Creek Solar in Orange County and Harmony Solar in Osceola County. To facilitate the project’s expansion, two distinct phases will be undertaken, leveraging the expertise of Origis Energy as a reputable solar developer and provider of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services. By harnessing Origis Energy’s established capabilities, the project aims to achieve significant growth and further strengthen its position as a leading renewable energy initiative in the region.

In the initial phase of expansion, the project will witness the establishment of two additional solar farms: Rice Creek Solar in Putnam County and Whistling Duck Solar in Levy County. The construction of Rice Creek Solar is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, while Whistling Duck Solar is expected to be operational by 2024. These two new solar farms will collectively contribute approximately 150 MW of fresh solar capacity to augment the existing project, further bolstering its overall energy generation capabilities.

During the second phase of expansion, an additional four solar farms will be developed in Columbia, Levy, and Bradford Counties. The construction and operation of these sites will be carried out in a phased manner, spanning from 2025 to 2026. Once all the sites are fully operational, the Florida Municipal Solar Project is expected to generate approximately 600 MW of solar energy. This significant increase in capacity will quadruple the current energy output of the project, marking a substantial milestone in the region’s renewable energy landscape.
