Harvesting Sunshine: Solar is America’s Newest Cash Crop

Published on: March 12,2024    Views: 160

For generations, America’s farmers have used the sun to provide for their communities and support the growth of the country. Today, with the help of solar module and storage technologies, agricultural communities are delivering both the food that powers our bodies and the clean energy that powers our economy.

The integration of agriculture with solar energy, termed agrivoltaics, stands out as a rapidly expanding solar application in the current landscape. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, there are approximately 2.8 GW of agrivoltaic installations in the United States, with new projects being launched on a weekly basis.

Although there are still individuals who perceive solar development as in competition with agriculture, numerous communities are showcasing the mutual benefits that solar energy can bring to America’s farmlands and local economies.

On a farm, smaller residential solar setups owned by the landowner can notably decrease electricity expenses, frequently offsetting the power requirements of barns, warehouses, equipment, and the household.

Research conducted by Michigan State University revealed that a 10 kilowatt (kW) solar system has the potential to save the average farm approximately $1,880 annually. For energy-intensive operations such as dairy farms, the same 10 kW system could lead to savings of nearly $4,000 per year. When coupled with federal incentives and USDA rural energy programs, farms can further reduce upfront costs and enhance their savings.
