In a significant milestone, solar power accounted for more than 50% of the newly added electricity capacity to the grid, marking a first in history. Additionally, close to 800,000 households in the United States adopted either a new solar system or a solar module storage system.
Although federal clean energy policies were instrumental in fueling this expansion, the overlooked narrative of America’s favored energy source in 2023 lies in the developments occurring at the state level. Presently, 26 states along with Puerto Rico boast a minimum of 1 gigawatt (GW) of installed solar capacity, a significant increase from only 14 states five years prior. This surge in solar energy is delivering extensive advantages to communities across the country, generating numerous employment opportunities, reducing household electricity costs, enhancing grid resilience, and bolstering local economies.
In commemoration of this remarkable year, SEIA is unveiling the top five solar states of 2023, each of which is establishing itself as a frontrunner in the nation’s energy economy.
After a hiatus of over a decade, Ohio has made a triumphant return to the list of the top ten solar states, securing its highest position to date with a remarkable fifth-place finish in 2023. The state witnessed an astonishing year-over-year surge of 1,230% in new solar capacity, resulting in the installation of 1.3 GW.
The expansion is primarily fueled by investments in utility-scale solar projects, with more than 3 GW spread across 20 projects in various stages of development. These projects involve innovative collaborations that combine solar energy with Ohio’s thriving agricultural sector and livestock farms.
