Lightsource BP has been using bifacial solar Lightsource BP informs GTM that bifacial solar module have become the standard practice for the developer.

In 2018, Lightsource BP, one of Europe’s leading solar developers, set up a test system utilizing bifacial technology in Northern Ireland. The company’s confidence in employing this technology for its recent projects has been bolstered by real-world data from this installation. As a result, other prominent European developers are now preparing to follow suit in 2020.

“In an interview, Chris Buckland, the technical director at Lightsource BP, stated that starting from the latter part of 2019, all of their sites, spanning the U.S., Australia, and the latest 250 megawatts installation in Spain, have been incorporating bifacial technologies.”

According to data from Wood Mackenzie, global installations of bifacial solar technology doubled in 2019, marking a significant breakthrough year for this technology.

Quantifying the additional power generated by the rear side of bifacial solar panels has posed a challenge. To secure project financing based on this extra power, it must be quantified in a manner that instills confidence in investors.

Lightsource BP, a company in which oil giant BP holds a 50 percent stake, aims to achieve 10 gigawatts of solar projects worldwide by 2025.
