By June 2022, American enterprises have successfully implemented close to 19 gigawatts (GW) of on-site and off-site solar module capacity, marking a twofold increase from the 9.4 GW installed by 2019. This notable surge can be attributed to the swift proliferation of off-site corporate solar procurement, which presently accounts for 55% of all commercial solar utilization.

SEIA president and CEO Abigail Ross Hopper noted, “Roughly 50% of all corporate solar installations have been completed in the past two and a half years. Solar Means Business underscores the remarkable versatility of solar energy, whether it is deployed on a warehouse rooftop, a carport, or at an off-site location, demonstrating the diverse methods through which companies are fulfilling their energy requirements with clean and cost-effective solutions. From data centers to industrial refrigeration units, the most energy-intensive commercial operations are increasingly adopting solar power as the most dependable and economical means to energize their infrastructure.”

Meta has significantly boosted its solar capacity from 177 megawatts (MW) in early 2019 to 3.6 gigawatts (GW) at present, establishing the largest corporate solar portfolio in the United States. Target continues to lead as the primary user of on-site corporate solar installations, whereas Microsoft has surged into the top 10 by incorporating 479 MW of fresh capacity since 2019.

Urvi Parekh, Head of Renewable Energy at Meta, expressed, “We take pride in our efforts to introduce fresh solar energy into the grid, fostering further investments in rural regions and aiding the shift towards renewable sources. As we persist in our mission to power our worldwide operations entirely with renewable energy, we eagerly anticipate collaborating with partners, such as SEIA, to expedite the energy transition and bolster a sustainable, cost-effective, and dependable electricity grid.”

Vishal Kapadia, Senior Vice President of Energy Transformation at Walmart, emphasized, “Solar energy plays a pivotal role in Walmart’s dedication to evolving into a regenerative enterprise, driven by 100% renewable energy by 2035. Our array of on-site and off-site solar initiatives has significantly advanced us towards our objective, with renewable sources currently meeting 46% of our global electricity requirements as of 2021.”
